Step 1: Which Console do you have?

Playstation (PSone) ,Playstation 2, X-Box or Wii

There were several chips for the Xbox. Many of them are not sold anymore all are based on the same idea! There is only one important point, most companies sell these chips with a Linux Bios which does not work for backups and must be flashed from the customer. The reason is that the "nice" Bios contains Mickeysoft code and is not legal. The flashing process is sometimes difficult. So it is better if you get a chip which contains already everything. Some companies have a branch in Asia to get around this copyright problem, so better ask before. After installing a Mod-chip we recommend to install a bigger Harddisk and some software like "Slayers AutoInstaller 2.7".
